Quick Summary of Training and Educational Services:

Helping adults learn is among the most fundamental skills for organizational leaders to master. The act of a leader helping an employee learn something new is intrinsically positive and rewarding to both the leader and the employee. That it also creates new value in the organization is an added bonus. Continuous, lifelong learning is humankind's best defense against constant and rapidly increasing change. Our adaptability as learning creatures is the advantage humans have over instinct-driven species. Learning in complex organizations is no luxury; it's a necessity if the organization is to remain effective.

For service organizations, the training program that produces effective service employees is akin to the manufacturing department in a widget-making organization. Manufacturing creates products; training creates skilled employees who provide service. If a service organization reduces or eliminates training to save money, it would be like a widget-making organization cutting out the manufacturing department in order to reduce expenses. Training, continuous learning, and adapting is critical to optimum individual and organizational effectiveness.

Dr. Hartl has helped many client systems to create, develop, restructure, and strengthen their training programs. Among other things, we assist in all of the areas listed here:

We are also prepared to present fully developed and tailored programs in a variety of time formats on these topics:

Tailoring and Presentation

The STAFF DEVELOPMENT program is designed to help organizational employees appreciate their employment, understand who their internal and external customers are and how to exceed their expectations. The program also helps them to clarify the goals of their work, recognize their responsibilities as followers in the organization, accept responsibility for their behavior. It encourages them to regard themselves as active and effective contributors to the organization's mission, willingly accept feedback on their performance, and provide analyses of their efforts that help to understand what went right, went wrong, and how to avoid problems in the future.

The EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP AND SUPERVISION TECHNIQUES program optimizes the natural abilities of your organization's leaders. It focuses on effective techniques for goal setting, communicating including listening as well as transmitting, developing teamwork, appreciating others, managing processes of problem-solving and decision-making, delegating, organizing and leading special projects, taking prudent risks, and accepting responsibility for outcomes and organizational success.

The VALUING ORGANIZATIONAL DIVERSITY program clarifies your plans and accelerates changes in your systems and among managers and employees to reduce tensions, increase understanding, and create individual attitudes in which diversity among people is valued and used for improved performance.

The TECHNIQUES FOR MANAGING CHANGE program focuses on helping leaders sharpen their approaches to planning and implementing organizational change efforts that produce improved outcomes without experiencing a loss of control over the organization's essential work processes. Some of the techniques in the program are of the "tried and true" variety, based on methods that have proven their value over time. Other techniques included are more innovative, designed to help bring about changes quickly and produce desired outcomes almost immediately without alienating those involved.

The STRESS MANAGEMENT program explains how stress works in the mind-body-emotions complex, demonstrates what people can do to reduce stress in urgent situations, and provides clear guidelines for how people can increase their capacity to handle stress and how they can avoid stresses when possible.

The NEGOTIATION FOR WINNERS program engages people in understanding essential concepts central to win-win negotiations, helps them think about negotiation situations so they know what they are doing as negotiators, and gives them relevant negotiating exercises so they can begin mastering the negotiation process as a winner.

The CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING program shows people how to recognize a problem situation, think about it in an organized fashion, take it apart to analyze causes, and develop creative ideas that can contribute to practical solutions. When adapted to include leaders, the program also demonstrates how leaders can help people come up with solutions on their own instead of always asking the leader to solve all the problems.

The HANDLING CONFLICTS program examines the sources of most conflicts between people at work, gives examples for how they can be converted into sources of creative ideas, and shows people how to choose their words so that unnecessary conflicts aren't created in the first place.

The INCREASING CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION program involves people in discovering aspects of their own mental capacity that contribute to having more creative ideas, improving critical thinking skills, and creating organizational climates conducive to innovation and prudent risk-taking.

The TEAM LEADERSHIP FOR TOTAL QUALITY™ (TL/TQ™) program rivets your organization's attention on clarifying quality objectives, identifying customer needs, analyzing relationships with customers and suppliers, designing continuous improvement approaches to work processes, and measuring and assessing outcomes.

The PROJECT MANAGEMENT program is designed to help employees who have been assigned responsibility for completing projects involving interdepartmental resources understand the logical steps involved in their assignment, involve others with whom they must work effectively, and progress through the series of steps that will clarify the purposes of the project, build a cooperative approach for success, and produce project outcomes that will fulfill the original mandates for the project.

The TRAINING OF TRAINERS program provides both training staff and organizational supervisors and managers with principles of adult learning and the techniques for implementing those principles in a wide variety of learning situations from the training room to on-the-job.

The TASK-CENTERED TEAM BUILDING program creates powerful bonds of understanding and mutual respect among all key players regardless of rank or position. Tested in more than 50 different settings, the results from this program are guaranteed—improved cooperation among people and departments, stronger commitment to goals, fewer conflicts and delays due to attitude, and higher morale and energy.

The DYNAMIC PUBLIC PRESENTING program helps those who must present ideas and information to others to get organized, focus on the audience, prepare visual aids, handle all the details that show you're doing it well, and then present your ideas and yourself with dynamic confidence that will win over your audience.

The CREATING TRUSTING ORGANIZATIONAL CLIMATES program identifies a baker's dozen specific behaviors that impact an organization's climate leading to either acceptance and trust or defensiveness and fear. An organization's climate is among the most important influences in human performance. This program helps organizational leaders to develop a climate that deliberately enhances effectiveness and to avoid getting a climate by default that interferes with high performance.

The SYSTEMS THINKING FOR INDIVIDUAL EFFECTIVENESS program aims at changing the ways people think about organizations, work processes, and their own impact as leaders and workers. Instruction is provided in processes for critical thinking, problem analysis, developing options, and decision-making. The program rests on findings about organizations as living systems drawn from several fields of the natural sciences. These additions to our scientific knowledge are solid and serve as new metaphors for thinking about organizational effectiveness.

The FACILITATIVE LEADERSHIP AND EMPOWERMENT program infuses managers with commitment and techniques for "turning-on" the initiative and responsibility of all organizational employees. Only management can do this, and when they do, the results are breathtaking. This program also results in an understanding of the mentoring process and how to use it to rapidly develop future leaders.

The CREATING A LEARNING ORGANIZATION program develops perspectives on total systems that lead to dramatically improved communications, increased capacity to deal with organizational change, taking actions in the short term that also benefit the long term, developing entrepreneurial initiatives, and assuring continuing high performance.

The DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS program uses the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator™ to increase individual self-understanding and improve interpersonal relationships. Insights in this program are applied to such critical organizational functions as leadership styles, communications, motivation, problem-solving, learning styles, and stress management. The MBTI™ provides one of the most effective foundations for developing essential "people skills" in organizations. The impact of this program is typically immediate and often life-changing.
